GREEN MAN CELT... Comin' at ye THIS month!!
Our 2nd 'Limited Release Seasonal' is a blend of Dark Mild and whisky-matured Doppelbock. The Mild allows the whisky a little more breathing space, and it's a little darker than the Strong, tho' it's the same strength, at 6.5% ABV. Just 600L was brewed for the recent Dunedin Celtic Arts Festival, and they took a lot of it, but I kept some to be released this month. You really NEED to be in quick to get some...

July 2007
Our 4th beer, 'Strong', is finally ready to be released, but with a couple of words of caution.
There's not much of this 1st batch, so we're taking pre-orders NOW. It is due for release on Friday 13th July (who chose that date...??)...The REALLY GOOD NEWS is that its an awesome beer...!! We brewed a Doppelbock, which we then aged in whisky barrels for 3 months. After this maturation period we blended it with fresh Best Bitter, and we now have a superb marriage of the two... Some whisky flavour is still evident, and this is joined by the charred whisky barrel flavours, and the remaining sweetness from the Doppelbock. The Best Bitter provides a vehicle for the other flavours, and contributes its own smoked malt and hoppy characteristics...

Tasty brew anyone? This article appeared in the University of Otago, Business News June 2007. ...Not just any brewery, but one with admirable guidelines about what it produces and a fast-growing output. Green Man Brewery’s organic beers are being widely stocked in liquor outlets throughout New Zealand, and the Australian market is set firmly in Tom’s sights. Although in business for just over a year, the brewery has already won the coveted Morton Coutts Trophy, awarded annually for a high level of innovation or creativity in the brewing business...

The machines have arrived. They are so huge that we have had to remove the roof!
The only way to get them inside was for the crane to drop them in.

Welcome our new Braumeister, Enrico Gritzner. He arrived in April, and has made a significant impact already... He arrived on the Wednesday, brewed with our previous brewer Chris on Thursday, then brewed totally by himself on Friday, such are his skills and confidence level !! But then, with 14 years brewing for Sternquell Brauerei in Plauen, we should expect nothing less, really...

Our first limited release beer has been produced. Christian wanted to create a first class Weizen Bier to honour his friend and Brewing mentor, Klaus Brehm, who recently passed away in Germany. Our friends in the industry, including other brewers, have given very positive feedback on the beer and we will brew the crispy, golden Brehm's Weizen again.

After operating out of our own premises for less than 8 months, we recently won the presteigious Morton Coutts Trophy for Innovation... When Brewery Manager, Tom Jones, accepted the Award he was "absolutely thrilled" to receive the accolade from within the industry, and so soon after starting up . "Imagine where we will be a couple of years from now . . ." he says .

Brew NZ Awards article in liquor Lane Oct 2006... The Morton Coutts Trophy for Innovation was awarded to Green Man Brewery in Dunedin . There must be something in the water in Dunedin or something, because for the second year in succession, the trophy went to a Dunedin company. Last year, Emerson's Brewing Company, also from Dunedin, took the trophy. To add to the mix is the fact that Tom Jones, from Green Man Brewery, used to work at Emerson's!...

The use of 'wet glue' labels means that we no longer need to remove labels from our bottles. We continue to collect our own labelled empties, and will take back DE-LABELLED 'Euro' bottles from other breweries, but we do not have the facility to de-label them ourselves. Empties can be brought to the brewery, or to our stall at the Farmers Market on Saturday mornings...

After having settled in our new premises at 9 Grange Street, Dunedin. Green Man Brewery has now launched two of its main beers. The lager and the Best Bitter. Both have been extremely well received and we expect to be launching the Dark Mild before the end of next year.
Green Man Lager has been availiable in limited quanties since May last year, made for us in Invercargill, but we have now set up a brewing facility here in the center of Dunedin...
The opening of the New Green Man Brewery was a phenomenal sucess and we all enjoyed a sunny afternoon and evening with a brass band, Morris dancers and free flowing Lager and Best Bitter. Thanks again to all of you, who have helped Tom and Christian. Couldn't have done it without you.

Otago Daily Times Jan 25th 2006 Green by name by nature article that appeared in the Otago Daily Times on the 25th January 2006... A clue to a main point of difference with the new brewery -an emphasis on organic ingredients and recycling - is in its name: The Green Man is an ancient mythical character representing Man's connection with nature. Celtic stone images have foliage sprouting from their mouths. Medieval European churches have similar images which represent rebirth and the name is popular for pubs in Britain (one being seen in a recent episode of Midsomer Murders on TV One...
